Mr. Roger N. Gray
Office of International Programs
National Science Foundation
Washington, DC, 20550

Dear Mr. Gray:

I have been invited by the conference committee of the International
Joint Conference on Artificial Intelligence to present a tutorial
lecture on visual perception. My other purpose is to discuss with
colleagues in the Soviet Union their work on control theory for
manipulation systems and articulated mobility systems. I expect to
give the state of the art and current research directions in US
research, which would have most impact in the choice of research
directions. I expect that the information on control theory which
colleagues in the Soviet Union have available, would save about 3-6
months of work of one person on our part, and add some generality to
subsequent design decisions. Control theory is an explicit
ingredient in our work on advanced automation. I intend also to
discuss the US-USSR development program in automation science and
robotics.

I would be willing to lecture at a survey level and at a technical
level on theoretical aspects of visual perception by computers, and
on programming systems and language for programmable assembly
automation.

I speak and read French.

I will visit Drs. Briabrin and Stefanuk at the Academy of Sciences,
Moscow, Akademician Boris N. Petrov and Dr. Andrei Petrov, at the
Institute of Control Sciences, Moscow, Dr. Somolenko, whose
affiliation I do not know now, Dr. Ye. I. Yurevich at the Leningrad
Polytechnical Institute and Dr. Kobrynski and Dr. Artoboleski at the
Institute of Mechanics Leningrad.

I will send separately a letter of invitation from the conference
committee.

				Sincerely

	Computer Vision and Productivity Technology

		Thomas O. Binford
		Stanford University

We review the state of the art in computer vision and productivity
technology from the standpoint of representation theory and the
semantics of language for assembly and vision language. We emphasize
current and potential application goals and evaluate the effect of
the revolution in semiconductor technology, including CCD signal
processors, and costs and capabilities. Scientific goals and key
problems are discussed in the programming of systems to solve classes
of vision and automation problems, not just isolated problems. A
paradigm is presented for these systems in the near future.
